DESIGN IN A BOX- Bathroom Redo

April 27th, 2010

A client of ours was tired of her outdated bathroom and desperately needed a makeover. She had outdated fixtures, color, poor lighting and out of scale vanity offering little storage.

She used our DESIGN IN A BOX service where we gave her a design plan, a shopping list and sources for where she could find all of the materials and furnishings  all for a fixed fee. They wanted a fresh clean look using black and white.  So here is what we suggested:

  • No VOC eggshell white paint on all the walls and window trim
  • No VOC black paint on beadboard and door trim
  • Curved shower curtain rod to give more space in the bath tub
  • Shower curtain made from organic Mod Green Pod Fabric in Atticus-Red
  • New pedestal sink to open up the space
  • New energy efficient lighting
  • New Storage Dresser
  • New mirror

She  and her husband rolled up their sleeves and painted one weekend and installed the sink, lighting and curtain rod the next. Her mom sewed the shower curtain and lined it with a eco-friendly liner. She picked out some great art pieces and voila what a difference!

We are so excited that our client was able to use our super easy DESIGN IN A BOX service and save money by buying and installing  all of the items herself.

Our Design in a Box Service gets you:

  • Floor plan and layout for one room
  • Furniture, furnishings, finishes and accessories selections
  • Shopping list for all your items
  • Source for all your items
  • Installer information (such as painters, wall paper, landscape, seamstress)
  • 10 % discount on all items purchased from Spruce
  • cost $500.00

This is a great way to get a designer look for less and be in charge of your own budget  and schedule without any markups.  If you live away send us pictures and your room dimensions and we can put together a designer look for you.  We have done rooms as far away as Chicago.

WOOLYPOCKETS

April 8th, 2010

Wall made from Wally Pockets

Create an instant living wall with the Woollypockets ingenious flexible planters.  You can achieve vertical gardens in your living room, backyard or office walls or create horizontal urban gardens in your patios, ledges or window sills.  The product is made from recycled plastic water bottles (yes the ones that we all dutifully recycled after much guilt about using them) and the lining is waterproof all stitched together by hand.

The Wallypocket comes as a single triple or five units piece so you can plant away- exercise those green thumbs.  Deck those French Quarter galleries and our fabulous porches to celebrate our outdoor time ahead with the Wallys.   I am planning to plant herbs in mine on my back porch for my culinary needs.

Meadow and Islands are  felt containers so that you can plant whatever you like in it especially when you thought you could not like on a terrace, rooftop, patio, warehouse district balcony or a ledge.  It is an urban gardener’s dream come true. Best of all it does not leak all over the floor or your table so you can be rest assured.

Are you inspired…go get your woolly on!

Sort of Coal-Kuro and Shiro Soap

April 7th, 2010

Love the Sort of Coal Kuro Soap! The product comes in a smart packaging with black lettering and is just handsome to look at. The soap itself is a pitch black perfect square soap and looks really modern.  On lathering the soap the lather is black and at first I was wondering about that but when I put it on my face it felt like a mini face mask. The soap is super gentle and lifts all the grime of your face leaving it perfectly clean with none of the post cleaning tightness. I have been using it regularly for about a month and I feel my skin feels and looks great!  Truly look forward to my mini facial before bedtime.

The Shiro Soap is pure white and also works beautifully on the skin.  It leaves the skin clean and free of any makeup and dust accumulated during the day.  The Shiro also moisturizes the skin for added softness. Love that both soaps do not have any kind of fragrance or residue.  It is just pure soap.  The other aspect I really dig about it is that is actually retains is wonderful shape and does not melt away like other soaps and it looks great in my modern soap dish.

Sort of Coal is a great company and they managed to bring together an ancient Japanese technique of using coal to purify water and skin in an uber modern way.

We just got it in at Spruce and really excited to share this product with you.  For in depth info see this product on our website

SPRUCE at Art in Bloom

March 22nd, 2010

Art in Bloom is an annual fundraiser in NOMA, New Orleans Museum of Art.  The focus is art and flowers and how artists interpret art into floral arrangements.  This year’s theme is Green and we were thrilled to have been invited to give a presentation at this event.

Our presentation is going to be a discussion called Green Intervention- Ways to introduce Green design into you life.  We will be doing case studies of three projects and demonstrate our products.

I am really excited to share our eco-modern products especially our latest item:  Woolypocket.  This felt hanging basket can be hung anywhere indoors or out and can hold beautiful plants to create an instant living wall.  I particularly love this image showing the meadow and the wally….brings out my inner hippy.

TOP 10 FOR 2010

January 9th, 2010

SPRUCE, New Orleans

Dear Friends,

Spruce turned one on December 13 2009.  We have had one amazing year and look forward for more to come.  We learnt a whole lot about operating a small business, even more about innovations in the world of green design and most importantly established wonderful relationships with our clients and vendors.  So now we move into a new year and with that we present our BLOG.  We hope to bring you our personal experiences in creating wonderful green spaces, hunting down cutting edge designers and products and tidbits of our world at Spruce.

Our regular contributors will be myself, Nomita Joshi-Gupta,  and my dear friend and business partner Cheryl Murphy.  We will have guest contributors once in a while as well.  Feel free to comment and post your thoughts…we love to listen.

My first entry for this year is my

Top Ten Trends  for 2010

TECHNOLOGY

People are going to embrace more and more technology to make life easier in 2010.  Gadgets that can do more like the popular iphone will stay in the forefront.  Readers will replace printed magazines, books  and newspapers with one device like the Kindle and the Plastic Logic Reader  coming out in Jan 2010 will gain immense popularity.  People are getting used to the idea of reading screens and this will further the birth of more blogs and deaths of more magazines.  See our new blog

VALUE

I feel that after going through tough times people are really discovering a new value in goods and services.  People are going to look for items and objects with not just an economic value but also an added value which is either a well designed object, precious and with a story.  We carry interesting one of a kind art objects that are handmade and created by individual artists all over the world.  These were popular over the holidays.  Our customers wanted to own an object that meant something to them and spoke to them. Our ceramic Buddha teacups, organic bowl and hand painted tablecloths were popular.

LOCAL

People are going to continue to buy local and support local because they see this as a benefit to themselves in the long run-they are saving their own community.  We had several people come and buy items from us just based on that fact.  Even though some of our items can be bought on the web clients bought them from us!  VERS iPhone shell case was a hot seller.

HANDMADE

As much as people embrace technology people are going to embrace and value handmade as it  becomes scarce.  Objects that combine technology and handmade are even more enticing.  Sites like etsy will be really popular for people looking for this stuff.

OUTDOORS

People are going to embrace their outdoor living spaces and enhance them to extend their living spaces.  They will invest in beautiful surfaces, furniture, planters and fire places to really make these spaces special,  They will look for new ways to create fountains, modern ways to group plants and create outdoor kitchens.  People will want to vacation in their own backyards.  Rock and container gardens, growing your own food and growing on walls and surfaces will be in. We will be carrying products that achieve these looks and goals.  We have stunning outdoor fireplaces – Ecosmartfire and planters- Greenform  and surfaces- Seastone (made with coral and seaglass)

PATTERNS

Technology will dictate patterns and the pixel pattern will be big this year in colors and black and white.  We will see gigantic geometrics and floral patterns made possible by technology in tiles and carpets and wallpapers. GREEN

Last but not least the green movement will continue to grow and offer more choices.  Some of the trends listed such as local, handmade, outdoors  and value are all spokes of the green wheel but more innovation in the green industry continues.  Fabrics, surfaces and furnishes made from recyclables continues to amaze us.  Centuries old practices such as vegetables dyes, weaving, pottery as reinvented and re-imagined for our modern uses will be at the forefront as they coming technology, handmade and green values.  This Spring we offer SORT of COAL.  Sticks of white coal immersed in water to  purify it from impurities and chlorine taste.  Blocks of coal can be places in the bathroom and living spaces to absorb odor.  In addition to being functional objects they are sculptural and beautiful.
