The Green Project held its annual fundraiser SALVATIONS at Canal Place on April 16, 2011, a furniture design competition utilizing reclaimed, repurposed & recycled materials.
SALVAGE + CREATIONS = SALVATIONS
All proceeds were to benefit New Orleans’ oldest local environmental non-profit, The Green Project.
The Green Project keeps over 1.8 million pounds of usable materials from the waste stream and over 40,000 gallons of paint out of the ground water supply and wetlands.

I had the honor of being one of the judges for this competition. Entries highlighted impressive use of common materials. The competition entries were displayed at Canal Place and the winners were auctioned off in a live auction. We have been lucky to represent two of the competition winners at Spruce.

William Roberts of NOMAD Studio and Paul Troyano.

The bone bench by William Roberts was the overall competition winner and is comprised of salvaged plywood fused together and cut to shape.

BONE BENCH Best in Show Salvations 2011

The Bench is a fine example of organic modern, impeccably conceived and crafted is on show at Spruce Eco-Studio

Paul Troyano’s Fir Branch Table was awarded Salvations 2011 Best Craftsmanship Award.

This table fashioned out of salvaged Fir evokes a gazelle like quality. Paul’s work is on display and sale at Spruce for the next few months. Here are couple of pieces:

We have been too busy at Spruce, but this year, we promise to stay updated on our projects, our cool finds in New Orleans and beyond and all kinds of design tips and advice. Stay tuned and meanwhile get inspired by our inspirations

Honeysuckle Pink:

Kelly Wearstler for her exuberance:

and Peonies photographed superbly by talented artist Kari Herer

A client of ours was tired of her outdated bathroom and desperately needed a makeover. She had outdated fixtures, color, poor lighting and out of scale vanity offering little storage.

She used our DESIGN IN A BOX service where we gave her a design plan, a shopping list and sources for where she could find all of the materials and furnishings all for a fixed fee. They wanted a fresh clean look using black and white. So here is what we suggested:

No VOC eggshell white paint on all the walls and window trim

No VOC black paint on beadboard and door trim

Curved shower curtain rod to give more space in the bath tub

Shower curtain made from organic Mod Green Pod Fabric in Atticus-Red

New pedestal sink to open up the space

New energy efficient lighting

New Storage Dresser

New mirror

She and her husband rolled up their sleeves and painted one weekend and installed the sink, lighting and curtain rod the next. Her mom sewed the shower curtain and lined it with a eco-friendly liner. She picked out some great art pieces and voila what a difference!

We are so excited that our client was able to use our super easy DESIGN IN A BOX service and save money by buying and installing all of the items herself.

Create an instant living wall with the Woollypockets ingenious flexible planters. You can achieve vertical gardens in your living room, backyard or office walls or create horizontal urban gardens in your patios, ledges or window sills. The product is made from recycled plastic water bottles (yes the ones that we all dutifully recycled after much guilt about using them) and the lining is waterproof all stitched together by hand.

The Wallypocket comes as a single triple or five units piece so you can plant away- exercise those green thumbs. Deck those French Quarter galleries and our fabulous porches to celebrate our outdoor time ahead with the Wallys. I am planning to plant herbs in mine on my back porch for my culinary needs.

Meadow and Islands are felt containers so that you can plant whatever you like in it especially when you thought you could not like on a terrace, rooftop, patio, warehouse district balcony or a ledge. It is an urban gardener’s dream come true. Best of all it does not leak all over the floor or your table so you can be rest assured.

Are you inspired…go get your woolly on!
